Notes on building observable systems and operating them at scale.
SQLite 3.31.0 adds virtual and stored generated columns. Their restrictions explain which calculations belong in a row and how the schema affects compatibility with older readers.
Terraform 0.12.20 adds try and can for dynamic expression errors. Their useful boundary is input normalization, with ordinary configuration mistakes still reported as errors.
The new dashboard gives local Compose applications a shared view, while changes beneath the interface address the differences between desktop container environments.
A transliteration regression and two regex failures show why development releases need tests for combinations of language features.
The public Kubernetes bug bounty pays researchers to examine cluster code and the build and release infrastructure. Its design depends on informed triage and an existing private security response process.
CVE-2019-12399 exposes a mismatch between variable substitution and reverse transformation. A reference embedded inside a longer configuration value could return as plaintext through the task API.
Redis Day Seattle begins with training before a day of user presentations. The announced metering and rate-limiting session illustrates why Redis application patterns need explicit memory and execution policies.
Type-only imports give single-file compilers an explicit erasure rule. The beta also adds JavaScript private fields, whose runtime protection differs from TypeScript's private modifier.
rqlite 5.1.0 adds non-voting replicas and a freshness control for local reads. Read capacity can grow without increasing the voting membership, provided callers choose the intended consistency level.
pgAdmin 4.17 makes multilevel partitioned tables visible in its browser. The change matters because a PostgreSQL partition can itself be a partitioned table with children of its own.
A patch release repairs repeated Secret watches that can overload kube-apiserver. Its fixes also address malformed sidecar bootstrap configuration in mixed container layouts.
P2017R0 proposes propagating iterator-lifetime properties through range adapters. A temporary wrapper and the storage it references can have different lifetimes.
Bundler 2.1.4 repairs inline gem loading and removes an optional internal require that could activate an application dependency too early.
N2470 proposes a preprocessing directive for binary resources. Its design lets compilers avoid parsing resource bytes as ordinary initializer expressions.
Python 2 reaches its support deadline. The difficult part of moving on is the meaning of data and the dependency graph, not the syntax conversion.
rqlite 5.0.0 preserves the HTTP query and insert API while changing its consensus implementation. Migration crosses that boundary through a database export and restoration into a new cluster.
Crunchy Data's learning portal pairs focused PostgreSQL and PostGIS topics with interactive exercises. Its open tutorial license makes the instructional material reusable.
Ruby 2.7 ships experimental pattern matching, numbered block parameters, and keyword migration warnings. The release improves expression of intent while exposing older ambiguities in method calls.
Datasette 0.33 stops suggesting column facets whose values never repeat. It also exposes rowid in filter menus and labels empty query results explicitly.
The maintenance release skips ordinary symbol declaration for dynamic top-level this property names. Its regression test preserves a precise strict JavaScript diagnostic.
Perl 5.31.7 introduces isa syntax for testing object membership. The operator handles non-objects safely and preserves custom isa methods.
The non_exhaustive attribute prevents downstream code from depending on a complete set of variants or fields. Rust 1.40 also ends borrow-checker migration warnings for the 2015 edition.
Redis 6.0 RC1 previews ACL users, TLS and optional threaded I/O while introducing RESP3 negotiation. The versioned implementation shows which boundaries change and which work remains in the main command path.
asyncio stops supporting reuse_address for datagram endpoints because the UDP socket option can distribute incoming traffic across processes with different user IDs.
CockroachDB 19.1.6 fixes load-based splits that could divide a row's column families. It also restores a storage check before liveness heartbeats and carries qualified changefeed repairs.
Kafka 2.4 introduces a Connect-based replication framework with remote topic naming and consumer checkpoints. Copied records still belong to a different cluster, so reader positions need translation.
Swift 5.1.3 continues the module-stable release line. Its release tag provides a concrete toolchain identity while compiler, language-mode, and library compatibility remain separate concerns.
Boost 1.72 updates Asio's return-type deduction and associates default completion tokens with executors. The changes extend asynchronous APIs without requiring a separate operation for each calling style.
Desktop Edge 2.1.7.0 makes container endpoints visible in the dashboard list. The release also corrects navigation and several host-to-container integration failures.
The December release addresses macOS download verification and warns about external references that can make destroy-time provisioners impossible to order.
