Notes on building observable systems and operating them at scale.
Go 1.11 lets dependency identity move beyond GOPATH and compiles programs for JavaScript WebAssembly hosts. Both changes arrive with explicit experimental boundaries.
Redis Labs confirms that core Redis remains BSD-licensed while its modules use Apache 2.0 with Commons Clause restrictions. The module license defines selling broadly enough to include certain hosted services.
Docker 18.06.1 stops its managed containerd from starting the CRI plugin by default. The change addresses an unexpected listener on port 10010 and clarifies the difference between embedded and standalone runtime configurations.
Unicode 11 support in Perl 5.29.2 preserves whitespace tailoring and exposes the practical consequences of new Georgian case mappings.
The first remote backend maps local workspace names to Enterprise workspaces and runs plans remotely. Other execution operations still require the web interface.
Replacing nix-devel with Discourse changes the shared discussion venue while leaving archive import and email participation as distinct practical concerns.
A double iterator advance could omit a live row after a deletion marker. The August release repairs the export loop and bounds storage batch grouping for recovery.
N4766 specifies reflexpr and template operations over reflection metadata. Alias identity and implementation-defined meta-object types explain how this experimental design connects program structure to generic code.
Kubebuilder packages the development work around a Kubernetes API and its controller. Its reconciliation model explains which operational decisions the SDK can standardize and which remain application-specific.
A libpq state-reset bug shows why each connection attempt needs fresh security evidence. The August update also repairs authorization through updatable views.
Rails 5.2.1 replaces blocking pattern deletion with batched Redis scanning and fixes cache storage inflation. Existing inflated entries need separate cleanup because the patch does not rewrite stored data.
Confluent brings the team behind Onyx and Pyrostore into its cloud effort. The announcement concerns engineering direction, with storage and processing named together as the work to extend.
Programs can select the system allocator or supply a GlobalAlloc implementation on stable Rust. The interface makes allocation policy explicit while retaining strict memory-layout obligations.
Python 3.5.6 fixes denial-of-service risks in difflib and poplib by changing their regular expressions. The patch makes a useful distinction between limiting input size and limiting the work spent matching it.
glibc 2.28 supplies the ISO C thread interfaces in threads.h. Its implementation adapts entry-point results and error codes while sharing the underlying pthread machinery.
The SASI fixes in Cassandra 3.11.3 address unsupported analyzer types and index-file deletion during redistribution. A separate B-tree change removes a recycler implicated in retained heap.
Istio 1.0 declares its core ready for production and introduces permissive mutual TLS migration. Client destination rules and server authentication policy remain separate parts of the resulting behavior.
repmgr 4.1 changes exit statuses, command validation and daemon defaults. These small interface changes affect how automation interprets PostgreSQL replication health.
Rails 5.2.1 RC1 corrects Active Storage uploads for zero-byte files and fixes the metadata response shape. The empty-file case exposes a missing transition in chunked checksum calculation.
Kafka 2.0 adds SASL/OAUTHBEARER callbacks, prefixed access rules and hostname verification by default. The OAuth implementation supplies an integration framework whose built-in unsecured tokens are intended for development.
Project references separate compilation units and let build mode order their dependencies. The new unknown type separately requires callers to establish what a value supports before using it.
Swift 4.1.3 brings a Decimal correction to Linux users on the 4.1 branch. The patch repairs carry and borrow handling and avoids floating-point conversion when constructing decimals from integers.
Reaper 1.2.2 corrects repair-unit lookup and ownership. It also puts background executors under the application lifecycle so repair management shuts down more predictably.
Go Cloud launches with portable service APIs for AWS and GCP. Its blob example shows how familiar Go interfaces separate application operations from provider construction.
Perl 5.29.1 separates illegal brace syntax from literal uses that remain supported, and restricts delimiters to leave room for Unicode graphemes.
Docker 18.06 exposes BuildKit through docker build. Its dependency graph separates Dockerfile interpretation from execution and gives the builder a different basis for scheduling work and reusing results.
INSERT ON CONFLICT had an update path that omitted CHECK validation. CockroachDB 2.0.4 validates the updated values before queuing the write.
Guido van Rossum steps down as BDFL after accepting PEP 572. His announcement leaves proposal decisions and the admission of core developers for the existing committers to organize.
A new resource applies an instance template to a single VM. Its schema distinguishes inherited values from explicit overrides.
cache.nixos.org enables all CloudFront edge locations, with published cold and hot cache measurements showing why download locality matters.
