Notes on building observable systems and operating them at scale.
fish 2.7.1 fixes iTerm2's paste-bracketing warning by disabling one directory-notification path. Bracketed paste remains enabled, so the repair is more specific than turning off paste protection.
The year-end review distinguishes delivered tools and library work from previews and incomplete integration. Its most useful evidence concerns the practical steps between compiler acceptance and productive development.
The j size modifier no longer requires a C99 compiler to build Perl. Its width still depends on the platform, so the change expands availability without defining a fixed-width format.
Python 3.6.4 releases the GIL during FileIO file-size lookup and corrects several other cases where blocked or interrupted work affected unrelated operations.
Beast supplies HTTP and WebSocket building blocks on Asio, while Mp11 manipulates type lists through aliases and variadic templates. Both additions target composition without requiring a complete application framework.
The December 2.0 alpha adds PostgreSQL-compatible read-only transactions and session defaults. The implementation rejects writes, including sequence operations, while allowing explicit read-write overrides.
Istio 0.4 adds Helm charts and minimal Cloud Foundry discovery in Pilot. The tagged chart shows how authentication and ingress choices become installation inputs, alongside new diagnostics and policy integrations.
Deployments, ReplicaSets, DaemonSets and StatefulSets graduate together into apps/v1. Kubernetes 1.9 pairs that compatibility commitment with beta Windows support and a separate alpha storage extension interface.
The December pgBackRest announcement reviews S3 repositories, encryption, and checksum validation. Version 1.26's encryption settings form part of repository initialization.
Terraform Enterprise reaches general availability with shared workspaces, API-driven operations and SAML integration. Sentinel checks proposed changes between planning and application, with enforcement modes that have different consequences.
Datasette 0.14 adds template overrides, static assets and metadata scoped to databases and tables. Publishers can adapt the interface and explain particular datasets while retaining the generated browsing tools.
rqlite 4.2.2 applies the status permission to expvar and pprof endpoints. The change separates a valid login from authorization to inspect the running Go process.
The first beta introduces content-based build decisions and successful-test caching for evaluation. The tagged notes explain the cache conditions and the explicit way to request another execution.
Reaper 1.0.2 replaces failing timestamp preconditions with fallback rules. The change keeps inconsistent segment metadata readable, but a synthesized start time does not measure repair duration.
Prettier 1.9 corrects comment movement that could affect Webpack, adds JSX fragment formatting, and fixes TypeScript rest and decorator output.
A Swift 4.0.3 runtime change prevents temporary NSString values from accumulating in the caller's autorelease pool. The source and regression tests show why reference counting alone does not describe temporary memory lifetime.
The one-gigabyte queue defaults have different scopes, and neither should be mistaken for a complete process memory limit.
The script state added for PSYNC2 exposed duplicate-loading failures. Redis 4.0.6 centralizes duplicate handling in function creation and widens quicklist counters for large datasets.
ISO records publication on November 30, with a December edition label. Structured bindings show how the revision's shorter declarations still carry specific storage and lifetime rules.
A restarted replica can resume at the right byte offset while lacking scripts referenced by the backlog. Redis 4.0.4 adds the missing script state to replication-aware snapshots.
Istio 0.3 adds mutual TLS for Mixer and Pilot communication and per-service authentication controls. The release also improves the caching and validation around shared policy decisions.
TypeScript 2.6.2 corrects incremental constant-enum output, restores a JavaScript diagnostic path, and adds JSX fragment syntax support.
Failed or cancelled restores could leave committed data without table descriptors. CockroachDB 1.1.3 adds failure cleanup and corrects descriptor handling when a restore resumes.
Missing JMX start notifications could leave repair segments with inconsistent timestamps. Reaper 1.0.1 changes when it records the start and reruns a metadata correction for existing records.
fish 2.7 ships argparse, directory-history selection and new string operations. These additions reduce handwritten parsing while keeping option syntax and text-encoding contexts explicit.
The move to containerd 1.0 beta changes Docker's runtime integration and requires stopping older containers before upgrading with Live Restore.
A state declaration can now initialize a single persistent array or hash. The distinction between one aggregate and a list of variables remains part of the syntax contract.
Terraform 0.11 adds registry module constraints and explicit provider mappings. It also changes apply approval and stops suppressing errors in module outputs.
Firefox ships a Rust style engine that shares immutable style data and computes child styles in parallel. Clone-on-write and scoped borrowing explain how its concurrency model works and where the C++ boundary still needs care.
CNCF launches its conformance program with 32 certified vendor offerings. Public tests and recurring certification provide a common API baseline across distributions without specifying every infrastructure choice.
