Notes on building observable systems and operating them at scale.
The Brussels event combines a dedicated PostgreSQL day with a developer room at FOSDEM. Its call for papers treats operations and application development as part of the same subject.
The December beta improves ORM compatibility through catalogue queries and accepted session settings. Several settings are deliberately no-ops, so successful setup does not imply PostgreSQL semantics.
rqlite 3.8.0 lets the CLI select HTTPS and control certificate verification. The change closes a usability gap between the secured HTTP API and the interactive client.
The containerd announcement separates reusable container execution from Docker's platform, with an expanded runtime and neutral governance still to come.
StatefulSets and PodDisruptionBudgets reach beta in Kubernetes 1.5. Their operational consequences become clearest when a node disappears or an administrator asks to drain it.
Conditionals give Terraform modules direct value selection. The new console and version requirements make those expressions easier to inspect and distribute.
Swift 3.1 separates development from release convergence and replaces irregular previews with daily snapshots. Its compatibility policy also distinguishes language changes from changes in imported SDK APIs.
TypeScript 2.1 combines keyof, indexed access, and mapped types so libraries can express property-dependent APIs without repeating every field.
Redis 4.0's first release candidate introduces asynchronous deletion alongside modules and PSYNC2. Its lazy-free implementation shows which work leaves the command-processing thread.
Two security fixes address distinct gaps between an API's apparent behavior and its implementation, closing upload files and respecting Darwin certificate trust settings.
Row values make composite comparisons easier to express, but their implementation must preserve SQL null semantics and join behaviour. SQLite 3.15.2 repairs that logic and several error paths.
rqlite 3.7.0 adds a dump-loading endpoint that converts an existing SQLite database into commands for its replicated store. The import path respects the distinction between SQLite state and the authoritative Raft log.
Terraform 0.7.13 repairs dependency recording in its experimental graph and fixes a Lambda crash caused by an absent environment.
Python 3.6.0b4 gives maintainers a final planned beta for checking a language that now accepts variable annotations without enforcing their types.
Perl 5.25.7 lets a heredoc follow the indentation of its surrounding code. The closing delimiter defines an exact prefix to remove without discarding indentation inside the string.
SE-0143 lets a generic type adopt a protocol when its arguments satisfy the necessary requirements. Its restrictions preserve a single answer to conformance questions at compile time and at runtime.
Cassandra 3.0.10 rejects an unsafe off-heap memtable setting and fixes materialized-view building. Both changes expose the resource-management work behind a maintenance release.
The Go font family began with a testing problem in Shiny. Its character shapes and distribution terms make it useful beyond that toolkit.
C++17 ballot work removes nonempty dynamic exception specifications. The change simplifies exception contracts while preserving throw() as a deprecated spelling with noexcept semantics.
WG14 paper N2098 examines whether hexadecimal floating point formatting permits redundant trailing zeros, and what that means for fixed size buffers.
RDS support for PostgreSQL 9.6.1 brings parallel query and phrase search to managed instances. The execution model explains which applications benefit.
The question mark operator preserves the Result model while removing repeated propagation matches. Its history through try! shows how a library convention can establish the case for language syntax.
Ruby 2.4 preview 3 makes Integer the visible class for small and large integers. Native extensions still need to distinguish their internal representations, and the preview exposes that compatibility boundary before release.
Redis-ML stores operational prediction models as module data types. Spark can train the model while Redis exposes evaluation through commands available to application clients.
Docker for Mac 1.12.3 repairs an ownership mismatch that broke package installation, alongside networking and shared filesystem fixes.
The C and C++ client adds compression support and lifecycle APIs that distinguish queued messages from completed produce requests.
fish 2.4 gives the system clipboard explicit bindings and revises history operations. The changes separate editing state from external clipboard state and make history queries easier to express.
The TypeScript 2.1 release candidate expands inference for incrementally initialized variables and brings async functions to ES3 and ES5 targets.
The new training and managed service provider program puts shared requirements around Kubernetes expertise. Its value depends on the connection between certification, upstream participation and operational support.
The November beta adds password authentication over the PostgreSQL wire protocol. Secure connections now require an explicitly created SQL user, including when they use certificates.
