Notes on building observable systems and operating them at scale.
The February beta replaces CockroachDB's decimal implementation and makes half-away-from-zero rounding the default. Existing calculations can change without a schema change.
TypeScript 2.2 adds a non-primitive object type and understands mixin classes, while relaxing property access through string index signatures.
Kafka adds SCRAM authentication with salted credentials, per-client JAAS configuration and an explicit dependency on ZooKeeper security.
Indirect method syntax exposed two memory errors in the parser. Perl 5.25.10 fixes those paths alongside regex scope errors and a Windows compiler compatibility change.
Swift 4 plans two language modes under one compiler, letting modules migrate separately. The release process makes source compatibility an explicit condition of stabilization.
Shorter garbage collection pauses accompany explicit HTTP shutdown and wider context support. The changes address runtime delays and the lifetime of application work.
Terraform 0.8.7 adds slice and new data sources. The useful distinction is between selecting part of an existing collection and taking ownership of the objects it describes.
SQLite 3.17.0 reads R-Tree node data through incremental BLOB access and reports about 25 percent better R-Tree performance. Its session extension separately gains support for WITHOUT ROWID tables.
Redis 3.2.8 reverses the bundled jemalloc upgrade after suspected deadlocks. Its MIGRATE fix also shows how rewriting a command can invalidate arguments needed by an error path.
rqlite 3.11.0 translates familiar schema-inspection commands into queries against sqlite_master. It also introduces a startup wait for applying the initial Raft logs.
The first RFC proposes a design-review path for changes that stall in ordinary issues and pull requests. It separates agreement on a design from the later decision to merge its implementation.
CPython replaces its patch-based Mercurial workflow with GitHub pull requests, while retaining its issue tracker and changing how fixes reach supported branches.
JD.com's Kubernetes platform retains its OpenStack networking while changing the unit of application delivery. Its migration report separates the gains from containerization from the gains of application orchestration.
A race in concurrent index construction can leave incorrect entries behind. PostgreSQL 9.6.2 fixes the build process, but affected indexes still need rebuilding.
Docker 1.13.1 connects Compose secret declarations to Swarm objects, with separate handling for stack-owned and externally managed secrets.
P0542R0 supplies wording for contract annotations. Its build levels and violation handling reveal the design choices behind putting preconditions and postconditions on declarations.
getentropy and getrandom expose kernel randomness through libc, while explicit_bzero preserves a memory clear that an optimizer could otherwise remove.
fish 2.5 combines modal editing with Emacs bindings through an explicit preset. The release also adds direct random selection and clearer behavior when leaving background jobs.
Libraries can generate trait implementations on stable Rust through custom derive. The initial procedural-macro interface is deliberately limited, with parsing and code generation handled by separate crates.
The January concepts paper argues that generic programming needs explicit requirements without runtime dispatch. Its design questions concern semantic meaning as much as shorter template syntax.
The final testing request makes archived builds available while deferring buildbot changes for PowerPC and s390x. It separates validating a candidate from changing the machinery that produces it.
Redis 3.2.7 recognizes POST and Host headers as reasons to close a connection. The release also preserves expiration during cluster migration and fixes a ziplist insertion defect.
rqlite 3.10.0 replaces a fixed ten-second Raft Apply argument with an operator-supplied duration. The same setting covers writes, strong reads and replicated API-peer metadata.
The January beta requires TLS 1.2 in secure mode and makes replica placement sensitive to declared locality. Placement preferences and mandatory constraints have different failure behavior.
The maintenance release closes a race between select wakeups and stack growth. Its other fixes show how ordinary language guarantees depend on compiler and runtime bookkeeping.
Terraform 0.8.5 changes google_project from a reference to a project lifecycle resource. The compatibility path depends on which identifier field a configuration uses.
Librdkafka 0.9.3 adds rebalance age, count and assignment size to client statistics while repairing coordinator state transitions.
The first NixOS Weekly collects release coordination and community work in one place. Its linked summit report distinguishes repeatable build environments from byte-identical outputs.
Bundler 1.14 adds conservative and patch-level controls for dependency updates. Downloaded gem checksums address a separate question about the package bytes selected by that resolution.
Docker 1.13 connects Compose files to Swarm services and adds explicit tools for inspecting and reclaiming local resources.
